A Small Business in Wadena County Giving Opportunities to Other Small Businesses
April 25, 2024
Small businesses are the backbone of Wadena County, Minnesota. With its picturesque rural landscapes, close-knit communities, and entrepreneurial spirit, the region is attracting innovative entrepreneurs who are breathing new life into the local economy. As The West Central Economic Development Alliance marks National Small Business Week, we recognize the hard work and success of entrepreneurs in our community.
One such success story is The Crafters Showroom, a vibrant small business that has captured the attention of locals and visitors alike. Founded by craft enthusiast Christy Minoletti, the store was born out of the challenges she faced while setting up and dismantling booths at craft fairs. Tired of the hassle, Minoletti wanted to create a permanent space for artisans to showcase their work hassle-free. Inspired by the consignment shop model, she leased a building and began offering space to other crafters and small business owners, allowing them to share their unique products with the community. The venture quickly exceeded her expectations, prompting Christy to purchase the property outright. Through strategic social media marketing, word of mouth, and its prime location off a busy highway, The Crafters Showroom has become a hub for both local and visiting customers. Since opening in 2023, The Crafters Showroom has become a go-to spot for unique finds, from custom embroidery to Amish-built furniture.
Showcasing Local Talent
The range of products at The Crafters Showroom is vast, spanning from furniture to various items like tumblers, water bottles, t-shirts, jewelry, 3D printed pieces, toys, flowerpots, planters, and crocheted items. Emphasizing unique items such as canvases and acrylic face mounts, the business also offers hydrographics, embroidery machine services, and custom creations. Future plans include expanding offerings with craft classes in winter and outdoor events and craft fairs in summer.
Unique vendors have showcased their products at the store, which has also given older individuals and hobby craftspeople a platform to showcase their work. Many of the store’s products also include Amish-built furniture from the community’s talented, self-taught craftspeople. The Amish community also has friendly relationships with their neighbors and fosters mutual support among local businesses. It is a real testament to the talent and creativity that exists in the Wadena County community.
Vendor recruitment primarily occurs through social media posts and inquiries. While originally from Wisconsin, Christy found Wadena County, Minnesota, to be an ideal environment for her business due to its proximity to small towns and the tranquil setting conducive to raising her family.
A Welcoming Community
The community of Wadena is described as friendly and supportive, with residents exhibiting a willingness to assist one another. Events like the grand opening drew a substantial crowd of over 400– a testament to the widespread community interest and support.
But The Crafters Showroom is just one example of the entrepreneurial spirit thriving in Wadena County. Joining The Crafters Showroom on the roster of Wadena County gems is Chick Bee Farms, a charming outpost in Menahga known for its delectable treats and handcrafted gifts. From freshly-baked sourdough bread to candies sourced from Finland and Minnesota necklaces, Chick Bee Farms delights visitors with its irresistible array of goodies. More than just a purveyor of sweets, this quaint establishment embodies the warmth and hospitality that characterize small-town life in Wadena County.
Meanwhile, in downtown Menahga, the Nordic Coffee House beckons with the promise of European-inspired delights and community camaraderie. Housed in one of the town's oldest buildings, this cozy café boasts a menu brimming with espresso, smoothies, and delectable breakfast offerings. But beyond the culinary delights, Nordic Coffee House serves as a gathering place where locals gather for European-inspired treats and a sense of community. With its cozy atmosphere and delicious menu, it's no wonder this café has become a beloved fixture in downtown Menahga.
From Christy's vision for The Crafters Showroom to the warm hospitality of Chick Bee Farms and Nordic Coffee House, these entrepreneurs embody the spirit of small-town success. Whether it's through their innovative ideas, their commitment to supporting local talent, showcasing Minnesota spirit, or their role in bringing our community together, these businesses are an essential part of what makes Wadena County such a special place to call home.
